Located at the intersection of the Old Montgomery Highway and Jasmine Hill Road in Wetumpka, Alabama, Hillside Baptist Church is nestled at the base of an old agricultural slope adorned with terraces that prevented erosion in days past. Just above the small, quaint sanctuary stand three crosses reminding all who pass by of the debt we owe to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Sunday School and fellowship areas are located in an adjacent house which is well over 100 years old!
This all started with an idea and a dream of residents in the Meadowbrook subdivison in January, 1984, when Cecil and Sybil Wilder initiated a meeting with Rev. Roger Singleton for advise on starting a new church. Initially Tuesday night prayer meetings were held in the Wilder home. A survey of others in the area was conducted to determine whether there was enough interest to move forward. Eighty-four people expressed an interest in either becoming a charter member or being contacted again.
In June, 1984, Sunday School, Training Union, and Wednesday services were begun in Kiddie College on the Old Montgomery Highway for the newly formed Ft. Toulouse Baptist Church. Ten people attended Sunday School on the first Sunday, and eight came to Training Union. From the beginning, a portion of all collected funds were allocated to the Cooperative Program of the Alabama Southern Baptist State Board of Missions, and to the Elmore County Baptist Association, with whom the church continues to affiliate.
In October, 1984, Reverend Bill Davis who had pastored other churches in Elmore County was called to shepherd the small congregation. By February, 1985, 23 people were enrolled in Sunday School and Training Union and an annual budget of $8,600 was approved for the year. Looking ahead, the members set aside $50 per week for a future location.
